E lder Abuse is a contemporary issue that, given the projected demographics, is expected to intensify over the coming years. As a result, and due to the complexities that arise when investigating this area, police agencies across the country are in the stages of implementing investigative sections to offer a specialized response to victims of this type of abuse.
In January 2005, the Ottawa Police Service launched their very first Elder Abuse Section to deal with incidents wherein there is an existing relationship of trust and/or dependence between elderly victims and their abusers.
The purpose of this submission is to shed light on some of the issues that are being uncovered in Elder Abuse police investigations as well as to touch on various investigative techniques and partnerships that police are engaging in, to ensure safety and justice for victims and to expose this “hidden crime”.
