K aren Philp is responsible for the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Office of Public Policy and Government Relations. As Vice President, Karen leads and co-ordinates the activities of Association’s staff and volunteers with federal, provincial and territorial governments across Canada, and is responsible for the Association’s development of public policy positions on diabetes prevention and management, pharmaceutical policy and health human resources based on the best available evidence.
Prior to her appointment in June 2003, Karen managed government relations for a number of non-governmental organizations, including the Canadian Cooperative Association, CUSO and the David Suzuki Foundation in Ottawa. She has worked for both federal and provincial governments, including working briefly in the area of international trade in Ottawa, and for five years in rural development with the B.C. government. From 1992 to 1996, Karen was a Senior Policy Officer with the U.K. Labour Party, responsible for development of the Party’s public policies for Scotland which included health care, education, jobs, the economy, as well as the creation of a Scottish Parliament.
Karen grew up in northern British Columbia, and studied for her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Alberta and her D.Phil. at Oxford University in the U.K.
