andra J. Mixer, PhD, RN is Assistant Professor, College of Nursing, at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Dr. Mixer earned her PhD in Nursing Education with Transcultural Nursing Cognate from the University of Northern Colorado; Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington, with a major in nursing administration/dual role in nursing education; Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Saginaw Valley State University; and Diploma-RN from Mercy Central School of Nursing, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Elected to the Board of Directors of the Transcultural Nursing Society as the Member-at-Large 2009-2011, Dr. Mixer has also served on the curriculum committee of the Transcultural Nursing Certification Commission (TCNCC) for certification examination revision. Dr. Mixer is currently serving as educational consultant for a HRSA-funded Nurse Education, Practice, and Retention project titled Developing Nurses’ Cultural Competencies: Evidence-Based and Best Practices [July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2011 for $1 million].
Transcultural nursing research studies and publications have focused on nursing faculty teaching culture care, diverse nursing student success, and Anglo- and African-American hospice patients’ and families’ culture care needs. Dr. Mixer has experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in face-to-face, blended, and on-line formats. Courses include fundamentals, leadership, professional role development, end-of-life care, transcultural nursing, faith-based nursing, and nursing theory. Community service focuses on addressing the holistic culture care needs of vulnerable populations through leadership, nursing care, and serving with senior/junior high youth and adults.
