Dr. Susan E. McClement is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba, and a Research Associate at the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit, CancerCare Manitoba.

r. Susan E. McClement is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba, and a Research Associate at the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit, CancerCare Manitoba. She also currently serves as the Scholar in Residence for the Nursing Division at the Saskatchewan Institute for Applied Science and Technology (SIAST). Dr. McClement holds an interdisciplinary PhD in the fields of nursing, anthropology and community health sciences.

The overall objective of Dr. McClement’s research program is directed at understanding the psychosocial issues experienced by palliative patients and their families, with an aim to developing educational and psychotherapeutic interventions geared towards mitigating distress. Her research is largely conducted within multidisciplinary teams, comprised of local, national, and international colleagues. Dr. McClement has received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR); the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC); the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation (MMSF); the Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC); and has been a co-applicant on a study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In addition to research, Dr. McClement is also a passionate and committed teacher and research mentor in the area of palliative care nursing. Her excellence as an educator has been recognized through her receiving a Graduate Student Association Teaching Award from the University of Manitoba, three undergraduate teaching awards for her course in palliative care, and an Honorary Diploma from SIAST.

Dr. McClement has disseminated research findings, delivering over 80 scholarly presentations  to local, national, and international scientific audiences. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles examining various issues related to palliative and end-of-life care, and has authored four chapters in authoritative palliative care textbooks.
