Phil Hurvitz

Philip Hurvitz is a PhD candidate in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington's College of Built Environments. Phil is an expert in applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Public Health, Urban Planning, and Natural Resources Management.

hilip Hurvitz is a PhD candidate in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington's College of Built Environments. Phil is an expert in applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Public Health, Urban Planning, and Natural Resources Management. He has 15 years of experience as a user developer, and instructor in GIS research and education. His current dissertation work is focused on analysis of objectively measured physical activity and built environment in a high-resolution and explicit space-time measurement framework. This research combines new generation ubiquitous sensing technology, GPS, and GIS for the purpose of understanding the relationships between patterns of the urban built environment and health-related behavior. Phil provides expertise in geospatial modeling and analysis on a number of projects spanning a wide range of applications, from public health / epidemiology / physical activity / nutrition to transportation, natural resource management, and archeology. His contributions have aided in securing several large federal grants, and is an author on several papers in the field of GIS and public health.
