P riscilla Gibson, Ph.D., LICSW, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Gibson is a prolific scholar, professor, presenter and author of numerous publications. Her mission is to prepare masters level social workers for effective practice with oppressed groups and to garner policy-makers’ attention to the plight and contributions of kinship caregivers.
Dr. Gibson, who is originally from Louisiana, earned a doctoral degree from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado; a Masters of Social Work from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana; and a Bachelor of Sciences from Southern University in Baton, Rouge, Louisiana. Previously, she held faculty positions at the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville and J.F. K. Center for Developmental Disabilities, University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Gibson is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Work (LICSW) and has over 25 years of direct social work practice experience. She teaches Social Work Practice with Individuals and Systems, Social Work Practice with Families and Groups, and Advanced Social Work Practice with Diverse Populations. She also conducts Study Abroad courses in Ghana, West Africa. Her research interests include the experience of African American grandmothers and other older caregivers in kinship care arrangements. She has conducted studies on middle-class African American adolescents and their families and adoption. She is interested in methods to teaching and training students on issues of differentness, oppression and culturally sensitive services.
Dr. Gibson has received several awards. From the College of Education and Human Development, she participated in the Educational Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP) and received the Cultural Diversity Award. She was selected to co-lead the Children and Family delegation for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) International Conference in Beijing, China. She has received funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Minnesota Kinship Caregivers Association; the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), and the Presidents Multicultural Award from the University of Minnesota.
