D r. Adrian Dart Cheong Chan - Ph.D., P. Eng. was born in Montreal, PQ in 1975 and raised in Waterloo, ON. Dr. Chan received a B.A.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 1997, a M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada in 1999, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB, Canada in 2003.
He is an Associate Professor with the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa ON. His research interests include biological signal processing, pattern recognition, noninvasive sensors, assistive devices, and electronic noses.
Dr. Chan has over 50 publications and has been recognized with a number of honours including: the Governor General’s Gold Academic Medal (2003), Maclean's 25 Best and Brightest (2004), Ottawa Life Sciences Council Dr. Michael Smith Promising Scientist Award (2004), Ottawa Life Magazine 50 Top People in the Capital (2005), Carleton University Spirit Recognition Award (2006), UNB Young Alumni Award (2006), OCRI Capital Educator's Award (2008). He is Registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society.
Dr. Chan is heavily involved in community activities. He serves as the Carleton University Shad Valley Program Director (http://shad.carleton.ca); Shad Valley is program for remarkable senior high school students, aimed at developing their intellectual excellence, initiative, and leadership, while challenging them to meet the highest standards of ethical conduct, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. Dr. Chan is also the faculty representative for the Carleton University Engineers Without Borders chapter (http://carleton.ewb.ca) and the IEEE EMBS student club (http://www.embs.engsoc.org). He is also a board member for the Carleton University Virtual Ventures program (http://vv.carleton.ca) and Co-operators Community Advisor Panel.
