I n 2007, Health Canada released the latest version of Canada’s Food Guide. While many take its tenets as sacrosanct, when held up to the principles of evidence based nutrition the Food Guide falls woefully short. This talk, presented at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 30th, 2009 explores the creation of the Guide – from the explicit involvement of the food industry in its creation to its recommendations and its failure to reflect a truly evidence based understanding of the effects of diet on chronic disease prevention as well as present an alternative that you can easily and confidently recommend to your patients, friends and family.

I enjoyed watching your lecture. As a Junior High Family Studies teacher I feel it is important to teach my students to be critical thinkers. I have always taught the Food Guide and will continue to do so, but will put more empahsis on some of the recommendations you brought to light and that the guide can be a tool but it isn't perfect and needs to be revised again. Thanks
