rlene S. Bierman, MD, MS, FRCPC, a general internist, geriatrician, and health services researcher is the inaugural holder of the Ontario Women's Health Council Chair in Women's Health and Associate Professor Nursing, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing; and Health Policy, Evaluation, and Management; Public Health Sciences, and Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.  She is a Senior Scientist in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital and Adjunct Scientist at the Institute for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences (ICES). Dr. Bierman serves as a member of the Ontario Health Quality Council and Chair of its Performance Measurement Advisory Board; on the Board of Directors for the National Centre of Excellence program the National Initiative to Improve Care for the Elderly (NICE)..

Dr. Bierman’s research focuses on improving access, quality, and outcomes of care for older adults with chronic illness, with a special focus on socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, inequities in health and health care, and the unique needs of older women. She is developing strategies to use performance measurement as a tool for knowledge translation. Her work addresses the interface between health policy, access to care, clinical practice, and health outcomes. A major focus of her work is the conduct of policy relevant research with the goal of increasing the uptake of evidence by policy makers. She is internationally recognized for her work in performance measurement and health outcomes for chronic illness. Her research has been widely translated into practice. As Chair of the Medication Management Technical Subgroup (National Commission on Quality Assurance) she led the development of the first suite of quality indicators of medication that have been adopted for mandatory reporting by Medicare in the US. As a core researcher for the Medicare Health Outcomes Study, she has given a series of webinars to providers, decision makers, and scientists on how to use these data to improve chronic disease management and functional health outcomes.

Dr. Bierman is PI of the POWER study (Project for an Ontario Women’s Health Evidence-Based Report Card) which through the collaboration of an interdisciplinary group of over 60 investigators at multiple institutions is developing a report card to serve as tool to help policymakers and health care providers to improve the health of and reduce inequities among the women of Ontario.

Dr. Bierman came to Toronto from the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) where she was a Senior Research Physician in the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research, and a Chair of the AHRQ Task Force on Aging.
