ichard Bercuson is an Ottawa freelance writer and columnist, adult high school teacher and hockey coach.

And in his spare time, he runs marathons.

He is a columnist for the Ottawa Citizen and also writes a humour column for MONITOR, a computer magazine. His non-fiction essays and columns have appeared in numerous publications and papers over the years, including The Hockey News, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Life magazine and others. As a short story writer, he has won Canada’s Arthur Ellis award for best mystery short story and the Valley Writers Guild Humour award for prose fiction. He has written numerous plays whose productions he oversaw. Some were adaptations of his own short stories.

When not writing, he is an active junior hockey coach, coach mentor and instructor in Canada’s national coaching certification program. He’s been involved in the development of numerous instructional programs for Hockey Canada and the Ottawa District.

To stave off boredom, he runs slow marathons, slightly less slow half-marathons and reasonably quick 10 km races, all in pursuit of keeping middle age at bay. His 2006 prostatectomy only temporarily slowed him down.
