M argaret M. Andrews, PhD, RN, CTN, FAAN is Director and Professor of Nursing, School of Health Professions and Studies, the University of Michigan-Flint.
A Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Andrews earned her PhD in Nursing (Transcultural Nursing and Nursing Educational Administration Tracks) from the University of Utah; Master of Science in Nursing in Pediatric Nursing (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Track) from Case-Western Reserve University; and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. John College.
Recognized by the Transcultural Nursing Society as a Certified Transcultural Nurse and a Transcultural Nursing Scholar, Dr. Andrews is nationally and internationally known for her contributions to Transcultural Nursing. She is senior author of the text, Transcultural Concepts in Nursing Care, which is now in press for the 6th edition. Previous editions of the book received the American Journal of Nursing’s Book of the Year Award and Sigma Theta Tau International’s Best Pick Award.
Dr. Andrews also is Project Director for a three-year federally funded Nurse Education, Practice, and Retention grant titled Developing Nurses’ Cultural Competencies: Evidence-Based and Best Practices [July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2011 for $1 million]; and Co-director for a $1.3 million federally-funded workforce diversity project called University of Michigan-Flint Initiatives for Nursing Diversity [UM-FIND] aimed at recruiting and retaining nursing students from traditionally under-represented groups.
Dr. Andrews has studied, practiced, consulted, and taught in various parts of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. She has established student-faculty exchange programs for nursing students at universities in Australia, Japan, and Hungary. UM-Flint currently has student-faculty exchange agreements with hospitals and schools of nursing in Cambodia, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, India, and Peru.
