A highly sought humorist and internationally recognized expert in applied and therapeutic humor, Karyn Buxman, RN, MSN, CSP, CPAE shows people how to manage their stress, improve their health, and boost their bottom line through humor and laughter. Through her years of research and experience, she’s determined that humor and its powerful consequences offer benefits in the workplace that can be the catalyst for change that will move groups forward and allow individuals to live more positive, productive and happier lives. Clients range from the Mayo Clinic to the Million Dollar Round Table and they hire Karyn to entertain, educate and inspire their audiences over and over again.
Karyn holds a distinguished position in the world of speaking. She has earned the National Speakers Association’s (NSA) Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation (held by less than 7% of professional speakers), and is one of only 176 experts (30 women) in the world awarded admission into the NSA Speaker Hall of Fame (CPAE). She’s received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor and is currently president of this international organization. She has appeared in journals such as Woman’s Day, Shape, Marie Claire as well as AJN, AORN, AACN Clinical Issues and Journal of Psychosocial Nursing. She’s also a contributing author for Chicken Soup for the Nurses Soul, co-author of The Service Prescription: Healthcare the Way It Was Meant to Be, author of Amazed & Amused, and is the publisher of The Journal of Nursing Jocularity, (the only humor magazine ever published for nursing professionals).
Karyn Buxman is still serving as President for The Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. The international conference was held last April in Anaheim with experts such as researcher Dr. Lee Berk and author Dr. Earl Henslin (This is Your Brain on Joy). A real highlight was the opportunity to celebrate the works of Norman Cousins and honor his adopted daughter, Sasamori Shegeko (see photo). Karyn will turn over the gavel at the 2011 conference April 7-10 in Orlando (lineup includes Regina Barreca, William Fry, Stanley Tan, and Madan Kataria).
Karyn still serves on the advisory board of Invisible Disabilities Association and had the privilege of speaking briefly at the 2010 IDA Awards and Banquet. (see photo) She is celebrating the 2nd anniversary of the online version of Journal of Nursing Jocularity, which she publishes. She spends much time with the TSA since her speaking schedule has become so busy, and she is spending much time on her current project: a book and media series on applied and therapeutic humor for chronic illness covering topics such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, arthritis, Parkinson’s, heart disease, stroke, and many more. As always, she welcomes input from others with their experiences, whether personal or professional in the area of humor and health.
